- 4 cups All-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup Sugar
- 1 teaspoon Ground cardamom
- 1/2 teaspoon Salt
- 1 packet Active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
- 1/2 cup Warm milk
- 1/2 cup Melted butter
- 2 Large eggs
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
- 1 Egg wash
- Coarse sugar (for topping)
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cardamom, salt, and yeast.
- In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
- Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into three equal pieces.
- Roll each piece into a rope and braid them together, placing the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Allow the dough to rise again for about 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the dough with the prepared egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar on top.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow the bread to cool before slicing and enjoy.
Notes
Try substituting some of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier option. You can also add raisins or nuts for extra flavor and texture.
