Ingredients

  • 4 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Ground cardamom
  • 1/2 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 packet Active dry yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1/2 cup Warm milk
  • 1/2 cup Melted butter
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla extract
  • 1 Egg wash
  • Coarse sugar (for topping)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cardamom, salt, and yeast.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the warm milk, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  3. Slowly combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough begins to form.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into three equal pieces.
  6. Roll each piece into a rope and braid them together, placing the braided dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Allow the dough to rise again for about 30 minutes while preheating the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Brush the dough with the prepared egg wash and sprinkle coarse sugar on top.
  9. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Allow the bread to cool before slicing and enjoy.

Notes

Try substituting some of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a healthier option. You can also add raisins or nuts for extra flavor and texture.
