These chocolate chip cookies have perfectly crispy edges and gooey centers, enhanced with nutty brown butter and a balance of sugars. A nostalgic treat for any occasion!

  • Total Time: 1 hour 33 minutes
  • Yield: 20 cookies 1x

Ingredients

Scale

3/4 cup (168 g) unsalted butter

1 cup (200 g) light brown sugar

1/4 cup (50 g) granulated sugar

1 large egg + 1 yolk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

1 3/4 cup (220 g) all-purpose flour

3/4 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1 1/2 cups (255 g) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prepare your ingredients: Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature. Gather butter, sugars, eggs, vanilla, flour, baking soda, salt, and chocolate chips.
  2. Brown the butter: Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir occasionally until it foams, turns golden, and smells nutty (about 5–7 minutes).
  3. Mix wet ingredients: In a bowl, combine warm browned butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar. Stir, then add egg, yolk, and vanilla. Mix until creamy.
  4. Incorporate dry ingredients: Whisk flour, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually fold into the wet mixture. Do not overmix.
  5. Add chocolate chips and chill: Fold in chocolate chips. Cover dough and chill in the fridge for at least 1 hour or overnight.
  6. Bake the cookies: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment. Scoop dough into 1.5 oz balls, spaced 2 inches apart. Bake for 12–13 minutes until edges are golden.
  7. Cool and serve: Sprinkle sea salt on top and let cookies cool on the tray. Enjoy warm or store in an airtight container.

Notes

Chilling the dough is essential for flavor and texture. For extra richness, try mixing in dark chocolate or chopped nuts. Cookies freeze well—bake from frozen with a few extra minutes.
